U.S. Bond Market Braces for PCE and Jobs Reports
The U.S. bond market faces potential volatility as investors await the August PCE and September jobs reports to gauge Federal Reserve interest rate decisions.
The U.S. bond market is experiencing increased volatility as investors anticipate the release of the August Personal Consumption Expenditures report and the September jobs report. Treasury yields on 10-year and 30-year notes are currently approaching critical technical resistance levels, with the 10-year yield at 5.2% and the 30-year yield trading above 5.35%.
While analysts forecast the creation of 100,000 jobs for September, a recent S&P Global U.S. PMI report suggests employment may have grown at its fastest pace since June 2022. This discrepancy increases the risk of a higher-than-expected employment reading, which could signal a heating economy.
A strong jobs report may pressure the Federal Reserve System to raise interest rates during its October meeting. Such a move could drive the 10-year yield toward 5.6% and push the 30-year yield toward 5.9% or higher.
