Sweden's Centre Party Pledges Protection for British Brexit Residents

Migration spokesperson Niels Paarup-Petersen promised to introduce laws protecting British nationals facing deportation over Brexit-related administrative issues if the Centre party forms a new government following the September 13 general election. He proposed reopening the application process for affected British citizens to remain in Sweden, arguing that minor errors have led to the threatened removal of long-term residents, including a 74-year-old man with dementia and a 78-year-old widow.

Paarup-Petersen criticized the current right-wing government for a hardline approach to immigration and residency obligations. The proposal follows the recent detention of a British man in Stockholm and subsequent calls from the UK's Liberal Democrats for political intervention to ensure the EU-UK withdrawal agreement is honored.

Recent polling indicates a centre-left coalition, including the Social Democrats and the Centre party, is on track to unseat the current administration. Paarup-Petersen maintains that the current lack of leeway has created appalling cases where vulnerable people are denied their right to stay due to administrative problems.
