SpaceX Integrates Aerospace Data to Train Grok AI Models

SpaceX is negotiating the purchase of customer and operational data from defunct and struggling startups to enhance the training of its Grok AI models. The acquired data will be transferred to xAI, the subsidiary responsible for Grok's development. This strategy follows a broader industry trend of AI companies acquiring vast datasets, such as Google's purchase of data from the defunct Spirit Airlines.

Elon Musk announced that the upcoming Grok 5 model, expected by the end of 2026, will incorporate the entire historical corpus of SpaceX data. Musk stated this integration is intended to establish the AI as a premier engineering tool. To maintain competitiveness against OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic, SpaceX invested nearly $15.8 billion in AI development last quarter.

These efforts follow the recent release of Grok 4.7, which features improved coding and knowledge work capabilities. While Grok 4.7 shows performance gains on benchmarks like CursorBench 4.0 and DeepSWE compared to version 4.6, it currently ranks third in agentic coding behind Anthropic and OpenAI. The model supports a 500,000-token context with a price point of $2 per 1 million input tokens and $6 per 1 million output tokens.
