People's Bank of China Plans New Policy Rate Benchmark

The People's Bank of China plans to replace its seven-day reverse repurchase rate with an overnight rate as its main policy benchmark.

The People's Bank of China is planning to shift its monetary policy framework by replacing the current seven-day reverse repurchase rate with the overnight reverse repurchase rate as its primary policy benchmark.

Governor Pan Gongsheng announced the initiative during the Financial Street Forum in Beijing on Monday. He stated that the central bank will study the possibility of switching the main tenor of its open market operations to the overnight rate at an appropriate time.

This transition aims to align China's policy structure more closely with those of its global peers. The shift creates a potential pathway for the central bank to lower borrowing costs and implement further monetary easing.
