Work AI Institute Warns Generative AI Creates Illusion of Expertise

The Work AI Institute, in collaboration with researchers from Harvard University, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of California, Santa Barbara, released a report stating that generative AI is creating an "illusion of expertise" among office workers. The study suggests that while AI tools make employees feel more productive, their underlying professional skills may actually atrophy.

Rebecca Hinds, head of the institute, identifies this phenomenon as "cognitive debt." The risk is highest for early-career workers in creative and knowledge-intensive roles, where automating first drafts and problem-solving removes the essential struggle necessary to build professional judgment. Hinds warns that the issue is worsened when organizations use AI adoption metrics in performance reviews, as this incentivizes reflexive shortcuts over deep understanding.

To mitigate these risks, the institute recommends that leaders identify roles that must remain deeply human. Success should be measured by real business outcomes rather than the sheer rate of AI tool adoption.
