Roscommon County Council Rejects Lidl Supermarket Proposal in Monksland

Roscommon County Council refused planning permission on July 17 for a proposed Lidl Ireland supermarket in the Monksland area of Athlone. The application, submitted in May, sought to develop a 2,358-square-meter discount store featuring a café and an additional retail unit south of the Joe Duffy car sales showroom.

Council officials rejected the proposal based on its generic design and lack of architectural merit, stating the standalone structure would create an adverse visual impact. The local authority further argued the development would be too car-dependent and fail to integrate with District Centre zoned lands, contradicting the council's Smarter Travel Initiative.

Local representatives, including councillors Valerie Duffy and John Keogh, expressed disappointment during a July 21 Athlone Municipal District meeting, arguing that Monksland's rapid growth has outpaced its available services. Councillor John Keogh suggested the developer failed to fully engage with the planning process and urged the company to return with an alternative proposal.

Lidl Ireland stated it remains committed to opening a store in the Monksland and wider Athlone area. The company has until August 14 to lodge an appeal with An Coimisiún Pleanála.
