Colorado River Indian Tribes Challenge Federal Water Reductions

The United States Department of the Interior announced steep water reductions for lower basin states on the Colorado River on August 22, 2026. The move triggered an immediate challenge from the Colorado River Indian Tribes, who claim the federal government failed to provide proper consideration to tribal interests during the decision-making process.

Attorney General Rebecca Loudbear formally notified the United States Bureau of Reclamation that the proposed use plan does not reflect the nature and extent of tribal water rights. Loudbear noted that the Colorado River Indian Tribes hold rights to more than 23 percent of the total Colorado River water allocation for Arizona.
