Uber Exits Nigeria and Uganda Amid Global Restructuring

Uber Technologies Inc. ceased operations in Nigeria and Uganda on September 2, 2026, following a thorough business review. The withdrawal was abrupt, with reports that the platform went offline while some riders and drivers were still mid-trip. The company will maintain help centers in both countries until September 23 to resolve outstanding issues for affected drivers and employees.

This exit is part of a broader global restructuring led by CEO Dara Khosrowshahi to simplify organizational structures and redirect investments toward autonomous vehicles and other high-return businesses. As part of this shift, the company is cutting approximately 3,300 jobs, representing about 10% of its total workforce.

In Nigeria, the company faced a difficult operating environment marked by intense competition from Bolt, inDrive, and the state-sponsored LagRide. Rising fuel costs following the removal of government subsidies and driver protests over high commissions and low fares further pressured the business. Despite these exits, the company stated it remains committed to sub-Saharan Africa and continues to operate in Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa.
