Arianna Huffington Warns CEOs Against the Success Trap
Arianna Huffington warns that high-level executive success can create financial and identity traps that leave leaders feeling unhappy and stuck.
Founder of Thrive Global and the Huffington Post Arianna Huffington warns that high-level executive success can become a trap that leaves CEOs feeling unhappy and stuck. In an interview with Fortune, Huffington describes a financial trap driven by luxury lifestyles and an identity trap where individuals become so closely identified with their professional titles that they fear leaving their roles.
Huffington cited her own 2016 departure from the Huffington Post as a move to prioritize health and wellness. Other business leaders reported similar feelings of emptiness despite significant financial gains. Wingstop UK cofounder Tom Grogan described feeling hollow after selling a majority stake in his business for approximately $540 million, while Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky characterized his company's 2020 IPO as one of the saddest periods of his life.
Additional executives highlighted the danger of tying self-worth to professional status. Loom cofounder Vinay Hiremath described an identity collapse following the $975 million sale of his company to Atlassian. TIAA CEO Thasunda Duckett argued that job titles are rented and should not be mistaken for a person's actual identity.
