Agentic AI Shifts Focus From Content to Autonomous Problem Solving

Agentic AI is evolving beyond generative AI by using goal-oriented reasoning to autonomously execute complex, multistep business and consumer tasks.

Agentic AI is emerging as a significant evolution beyond Generative AI by shifting from simple content creation to autonomous, goal-oriented problem solving. Unlike previous iterations that operated without memory or awareness, this technology utilizes iterative planning and contextual decision-making to execute complex tasks independently.

Justin Boitano, Vice President of Enterprise AI at NVIDIA, describes this shift as the next frontier of artificial intelligence. Organizations are currently implementing these systems to automate HR operations, streamline financial compliance, and manage end-to-end customer service journeys. Early commercial applications include Meta's business-facing customer service agents and an updated Alexa from Amazon for autonomous grocery ordering.

Other industry examples include IBM, which has demonstrated agentic AI managing home energy consumption by coordinating multiple specialized agents. Proponents suggest that this transition toward adaptive autonomy could increase productivity by up to ten times, provided that companies implement robust data infrastructure and ethical oversight to maintain transparency and safety.
