Union Pacific Beats Earnings Estimates and Bids for Norfolk Southern
Union Pacific reported third-quarter revenue of $7.2 billion and launched an $85 billion bid to acquire Norfolk Southern to create a coast-to-coast railroad.
Union Pacific reported third-quarter operating revenue of $7.2 billion, surpassing Wall Street estimates of $7.13 billion. The company's adjusted quarterly profit per share reached $3.53, beating the projected $3.47. This growth was driven by a 15% increase in operating revenue, resulting from core pricing gains, volume growth, and higher fuel surcharges.
Despite the revenue growth, the company noted that conflict in the Middle East drove up fuel prices, which pressured margins and negatively impacted its operating ratio by 140 basis points. Even with these costs, the operating ratio improved to 59.1%.
In a major strategic move, the Omaha-based railroad is pursuing an $85 billion acquisition of Norfolk Southern. If successful, the merger would establish the first coast-to-coast freight railroad in the United States.
