Mainstream Republicans Defeat Populists in Red State Primaries
Republican primary voters in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming rejected Freedom Caucus and populist candidates in favor of mainstream conservatives.
Republican primary voters in several red states shifted away from MAGA-era populism during the 2026 primary cycle, favoring mainstream conservatives over Freedom Caucus candidates. In North Dakota, Governor Kelly Armstrong saw 19 of the 20 traditionally conservative candidates he supported win their races, including a victory over populist favorite Rick Becker.
Similar trends occurred in South Dakota and Wyoming. Only one member of the South Dakota Freedom Caucus survived the primary. In Wyoming, State Senator Eric Barlow defeated Trump-endorsed Megan Degenfelder for governor, while more than a dozen Freedom Caucus incumbents were ousted from the state Legislature.
While the GOP moved toward the center, the Democratic Party experienced a rise in socialist-aligned candidates. The Democratic Socialists of America described the trend as a "hot socialist summer," citing the rise of Mayor Zohran Mamdani in New York City and socialist-endorsed candidates in North Dakota.
