S&P 500 Third-Quarter Earnings Projected to Rise 30 Percent

S&P 500 companies are projected to see a 30% earnings increase, driven primarily by a small group of artificial intelligence leaders.

S&P 500 companies are projected to report a 30% increase in third-quarter earnings compared to the previous year. Analysis of FactSet data by Dow Jones Market Data indicates that this growth is heavily concentrated among a few artificial intelligence leaders. Nvidia and Micron Technology alone account for 34% of the projected profit growth, while a group of 10 companies, including Meta Platforms and Broadcom, drive approximately two-thirds of the total increase.

Beyond the technology sector, energy companies are contributing to the growth due to higher prices linked to conflict in Iran. Some investment strategists are responding to these trends by shifting positions from AI hardware to power providers to anticipate the long-term electricity demands of data centers.

Market analysts are divided on the risks of this concentration. Some warn that the market is vulnerable if AI investments fail to yield expected returns. Conversely, others argue the current environment is more rational than the dot-com era because these companies are generating actual profits. MAI Capital Management maintains that the broader S&P 500 continues to deliver respectable growth.
