Fighting in Yemen Displaces Over 184,000 People

The International Organization for Migration reports that intense fighting in Yemen displaced more than 184,000 people between August and October 2026.

Intense fighting in Yemen forcibly displaced more than 184,000 people between August 1 and October 4, 2026. According to the International Organization for Migration, the majority of these movements occurred since early September, with a significant spike between September 27 and October 3, when 21,798 individuals were displaced.

The crisis followed an August offensive by the Ansar Allah movement in southwestern Yemen, which led to the seizure of the port city of Mocha and strategic access points to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on September 10-11. In response, Yemeni government forces launched a large-scale military operation on October 4 to retake these rebel-controlled areas.

Assessments in Ma'rib revealed critical vulnerabilities, including inadequate sanitation and a lack of safe shelter that left families exposed to airstrikes. Approximately 45 percent of assessed households had been displaced previously, increasing the risk of child labor. The International Organization for Migration is coordinating with local authorities to provide cash assistance, clean water, and emergency shelter while calling for secure, unimpeded humanitarian access to the impacted populations.
