Finnish Court Halts Deportation of Russian Activists

A Finnish administrative court quashed the deportation order for Nikita and Olga Belov, pro-Ukrainian activists who fled Russia in 2022.

An administrative court in Finland has quashed the deportation order for Nikita Belov and his mother, Olga Belov, two Russian nationals and pro-Ukrainian activists who fled their home country in 2022. The court referred the case back to the Finnish immigration service for reconsideration, citing new evidence including extensive international media coverage of the family's opposition to the invasion of Ukraine.

The Finnish immigration service had previously denied the family asylum, claiming they faced no real risk if returned to Russia. Antti Lehtinen, the agency's director for international protection, noted that only about 5% of asylum decisions are returned for reconsideration annually, usually when applicants present new information during judicial proceedings.

The case drew significant international attention. Bill Browder, head of the Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign, argued that returning the activists would be perverse and described the situation as a test of Europe's commitment to protecting opponents of Vladimir Putin. Additionally, Norway's Green party proposed offering the family asylum if Finland had proceeded with the deportation.
