Democrats Win Michigan Attorney General and Supreme Court Seats
Democrat Eli Savit won the Michigan attorney general race while liberal incumbents Megan Cavanagh and Noah Hood secured reelection to the state Supreme Court.
Democratic candidates secured key judicial and legal victories in Michigan during the November 4, 2026, elections. Eli Savit, the Washtenaw County prosecutor, defeated Republican Doug Lloyd to become the next attorney general, succeeding term-limited Democrat Dana Nessel. Savit campaigned on a platform of criminal justice reform, including the decriminalization of psychedelic mushrooms and consensual sex work, and the implementation of stricter gun laws. He significantly outraised Lloyd, reporting $2.3 million in donations compared to $1.2 million.
Simultaneously, incumbent Michigan Supreme Court Justices Megan Cavanagh and Noah Hood won reelection, maintaining a 6-1 liberal majority on the state's highest court. Chief Justice Cavanagh and Justice Hood defeated Republican nominees Casandra Morse-Bills and Michael D. Warren Jr. for eight-year terms. The races saw heavy spending, with the group Justice for All Michigan investing approximately $2.19 million and the ACLU Voter Education Fund spending about $400,000.
The court has recently issued several precedent-setting rulings, including limits on immigration arrests in courtrooms and the removal of over 20,000 individuals from the sex offender registry. Following the results, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel Jr. emphasized the importance of the judicial system respecting the rule of law.
