Democrats Flip Hamilton County and End South Carolina GOP Supermajority

Democrats seized control of Hamilton County and ended the Republican supermajority in the South Carolina state House during Tuesday's elections.

Democratic candidates achieved significant gains in two separate regions on Tuesday, flipping control of Hamilton County and ending the Republican supermajority in the South Carolina state House.

In Hamilton County, Democrats won 22 of 41 seats in a historically Republican stronghold. The sweep included victories in the sheriff's race, county council seats, and J.D. Ford's win for the Congressional 5th District. Hamilton County Democratic Chairman Josh Lowry noted that the results far exceeded the party's goal of 10 seats and created a leadership body that more closely reflects the county's diverse population.

Simultaneously, the South Carolina Democratic Party gained 10 seats in the state House, stripping Republicans of their supermajority. While Republicans maintain overall control of both the state House and Senate, the loss of the supermajority is expected to alter legislative dynamics in Columbia starting in January. The GOP also suffered the loss of House Majority Leader Micah Caskey.

Party leadership in South Carolina attributed the legislative gains to a nearly $1 million investment in House contests. Executive Director Jay Parmley reported that candidates overperformed their historical averages by approximately 10 points across all House districts. Analysts suggest these shifts were driven by voter dissatisfaction and a preference for bread-and-butter issues over political conflict.
