Sarnia Police Board Proposes Bare Bones 2027 Budget

The Sarnia Police Service Board is reviewing an amended 2027 budget proposal that increases spending by 5.94% over 2026, totaling just over $41 million. Board chair Kelly Ash described the plan as a bare bones approach, noting that the board has postponed a $91 million proposal for a new headquarters to prioritize repairing the existing facility.

To reduce external labor costs and meet security requirements, the budget includes funding for three new civilian positions: a mechanic, an electrician, and a court coordinator. The latter role is intended to satisfy enhanced security requirements from the Attorney General of British Columbia. The proposal also includes an annual $400,000 contribution to reserves and adjustments to human resource functions designed to save $50,000 per year.

This fiscal tightening occurs as Sarnia anticipates a significant tax hike in 2027. Separately, the board is nearing a collective agreement with the Sarnia Police Association, following negotiations that began in 2023.
