Police Arrest 15 After Far-Right Protests Spark Glasgow Violence

Police Scotland arrested approximately 15 people following violent disorder in Glasgow on July 25, 2026. The unrest began during a rally organized by the anti-immigration group Unite the Clans at Glasgow Green, which was met by a larger counter-protest led by a coalition including Stand Up to Racism and Women Against The Far Right.

Clashes at the park involved far-right demonstrators throwing bottles, wood, and other missiles, using flares, and performing Nazi salutes. The disorder later spilled into the city centre, specifically affecting the Oswald Street and Saltmarket areas. Police Scotland deployed mounted officers and helicopters to separate the factions. Recovered weapons suggested the violence was pre-meditated, with arrests made for assault, possession of offensive weapons, and resisting arrest.

Scottish officials condemned the events as the city prepares to host the Commonwealth Games. First Minister John Swinney stated that hate speech and lawbreaking would not be tolerated. Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken characterized the events as racist violence, while Secretary of State for Scotland Douglas Alexander described the scenes as wholly unacceptable, noting this was the second instance of serious disorder in the city within two months.
