Taiwan Reports 453 Citizens Missing or Detained in China

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council reports 453 citizens missing or detained in China since January 2024 amid investigations into an organ-harvesting trafficking network.

The Mainland Affairs Council reported that 453 Taiwanese citizens have been missing, detained, or subjected to restrictions in China since January 2024. This figure includes 172 missing persons, 242 held by Chinese authorities, and 39 detained for questioning. Among those interrogated by Chinese state security were four civil servants, including a nurse from a Ministry of Health and Welfare hospital questioned about a former military hospital.

These reports follow a separate legal action by Taoyuan District prosecutors, who indicted seven individuals suspected of running a human trafficking network. The network allegedly lured victims with promises of high-paying jobs to send them to China for organ harvesting.

Government officials stated they do not yet know if any of the missing citizens were victims of organ removal. However, authorities are working to determine if these trafficking operations are linked to independent criminal organizations or the Chinese Communist Party.
