Abta Warns UK Holiday Demand May Have Peaked

Abta reports that while 2026 travel matched pre-pandemic levels, nearly one-third of Britons plan to spend less on international trips next year.

The UK travel industry warns that holiday demand may have reached a peak as the cost of living squeeze forces consumers to reduce spending. According to an annual report from Abta, 88% of Britons took a holiday in 2026, a figure that matches pre-pandemic levels from 2019. While 74% of these travelers vacationed domestically and 62% traveled abroad, nearly one in three people intend to spend less on international travel in 2027.

Abta Chief Executive Mark Tanzer stated that demand remained resilient throughout the year despite significant challenges, including concerns over EU border checks and the US-Israel war with Iran. However, the industry faces persistent economic pressures that may impact future growth.

To mitigate these costs for consumers, the industry plans to lobby the UK government to reduce aviation taxes and provide support for the transition to sustainable aviation fuels. While Spain remains the most popular destination for British travelers, current trends indicate a shift in interest toward Norway and Japan for the coming year.
