AI Data Centers Projected as Top Global Gas Consumers

U.S. AI data centers are projected to become the world's fifth-largest natural gas consumer by 2035, with daily consumption expected to reach 15 billion cubic feet. This surge is driven by a reliance on onsite gas turbine generators to circumvent delays in power infrastructure. While hyperscalers such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are investing in small modular nuclear reactors for long-term clean energy, those technologies remain commercially unavailable.

Elon Musk has accelerated this shift by investing one billion dollars in a portable turbine leasing company. To address industry bottlenecks, his company, Space Exploration Technologies Corp., is initiating in-house turbine blade manufacturing. Musk noted that natural gas will still be needed to supplement and bootstrap solar for several years.

The transition toward gas turbines has triggered legal challenges. The NAACP filed a lawsuit alleging that the SpaceXAI Colossus 2 facility significantly increased harmful emissions, including formaldehyde and nitrogen oxide. Experts warn that unless domestic production increases by 11 billion cubic feet per day beyond current projections, natural gas prices may rise for average consumers.
