Shivakumar Explores Legal Closure of Karnataka Public Service Commission

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on September 22, 2026, that the Karnataka government is exploring legal options to shut down the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC). The move follows allegations of widespread corruption and recruitment irregularities, specifically involving a veterinary officer recruitment scam. Shivakumar claimed that members of the commission have "opened a shop" and that "thieves have joined the commission."

The announcement comes after the Karnataka High Court ordered the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by IPS officer Alok Kumar, to probe the irregularities. While Shivakumar supports the investigation, he questioned the court's authority to hand-pick specific officers for the SIT, arguing that personnel appointments are the right of the state government. The court has mandated a final report within 100 days.

Investigations are currently being conducted by the state police, the Enforcement Directorate, and the Criminal Investigation Department of Karnataka. A report from the Criminal Investigation Department of Karnataka has already detailed a money trail involving officials and middlemen, including arrested BJP leader Basavaraj Kannale. Shivakumar stated that the government's priority is protecting the future of students and job aspirants while ensuring the commission is handled within the ambit of the law.
