Karnataka Congress Battles Revolt After Cabinet Expansion

The Indian National Congress is managing an internal revolt in Karnataka following a Cabinet expansion on August 3 that reached the legal limit of 34 members. The move sparked immediate instability, with some legislators resigning and others facing public protests, including road blocks and tire burning in Kolar, Koppal, and Haveri, led by supporters of excluded MLAs.

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala launched damage control efforts to prevent disruptions during the upcoming Monsoon Session. These negotiations successfully convinced MLA Yashavanthrayagouda Patil to withdraw his resignation. However, other tensions persist; MLA B.R. Patil expressed immense disappointment, alleging that former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reneged on a 2023 campaign promise of a ministerial post. Meanwhile, leader Gayathri Shanthegowda was notably removed from a prospective ministers list minutes after its initial release.

KPCC president B.K. Hariprasad defended the selections, stating the party prioritized social justice for SC/ST, OBC, and minority communities over other groups, specifically Brahmins. To mollify disgruntled leaders, the party is offering appointments to boards and corporations, though reports suggest former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah remains displeased with the current developments.
