Stack Overflow Survey Shows AI Anxiety Among Developers

Stack Overflow reports that 60% of software developers try to avoid AI tools despite widespread adoption and rising job unhappiness.

A survey of 30,000 software developers across 169 countries conducted by Stack Overflow reveals a contradictory relationship between tech workers and artificial intelligence. While 65% of respondents utilize AI coding assistants, 60% report attempting to avoid the technology. This tension coincides with rising job unhappiness, as nearly one in three developers report feeling unhappy in their roles due to economic uncertainty, tech fatigue, and burnout.

Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar stated that the rapid pace of AI advancement has increased these anxieties, forcing workers to retool their jobs and raising performance expectations for entry-level employees. Trust remains low, with only 6.6% of developers trusting AI to make important decisions. Experienced engineers specifically argue that AI lacks the critical thinking and job-specific context necessary for complex problem-solving.

These findings align with broader industry trends. The Indeed Hiring Lab ranked software development as the job most poised for AI transformation, while Deloitte reported that 54% of business and IT leaders expect to move their AI experiments into production.
