Energy Department Orders PJM to Dispatch Backup Power
The U.S. Department of Energy issued an emergency order directing PJM Interconnection to dispatch backup power resources to prevent grid failures during high demand.
The U.S. Department of Energy issued emergency Order No. 202-26-50 on October 12, directing PJM Interconnection to dispatch specific generating units and backup power resources to maintain grid reliability. The order is effective from October 13 through October 16, a period characterized by high electricity demand.
Secretary of Energy Chris Wright determined a statutory emergency existed due to a shortage of electric energy or necessary facilities. PJM forecasted demand at or above 111,500 MW for October 13, with the most acute pressure expected in zones serving Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
This directive follows a pattern of emergency interventions to address resource-adequacy concerns. Similar orders were issued during a summer heatwave and in May 2025, when the department ordered the Eddystone Generating Station to remain operational past its scheduled retirement date to ensure stability.
