India Hits Non-Fossil Fuel Power Goal Five Years Early
India reached its target of deriving over 50 percent of electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources five years ahead of the 2030 deadline.
The Government of India has achieved its Nationally Determined Contribution goal of sourcing more than 50 percent of its electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, reaching the target five years before the 2030 deadline. Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh announced the milestone in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on December 8, 2025.
Singh further reported that India created an additional carbon sink of 2.29 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through forest and tree cover. Data from the Fourth Biennial Update Report submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change shows that India's net national greenhouse gas emissions in 2020 decreased by 7.93 percent compared to 2019, with the primary reductions occurring in the energy and industrial sectors.
These developments align with the country's Long-Term Low-Carbon Development Strategy, which aims for net-zero emissions by 2070.
