Twenty-Six Illinois Democrats Demand New House Leadership

Twenty-six Democratic lawmakers in the Illinois House of Representatives issued a statement calling for the removal of Speaker Emanuel Chris Welch.

Twenty-six current and incoming Democratic lawmakers in the Illinois House of Representatives have issued a statement calling for new leadership, threatening the speakership of Emanuel Chris Welch. The revolt follows months of criticism regarding Welch's leadership style and his handling of sexual harassment allegations against former state Representative Harry Benton.

A Tribune investigation revealed that Welch's office delayed acting on harassment claims against Benton for months and provided $1.4 million in campaign funding to Benton's reelection effort before taking disciplinary action. Welch has acknowledged missteps and described the Benton episode as a system failure, but he also faces scrutiny for his own past social media interactions with a former staffer and historical allegations of misconduct.

Dissenting lawmakers are seeking a deliberative process to select a new speaker in January. Governor JB Pritzker stated he is willing to work with whoever is chosen as speaker, leaving the final decision to the House members' votes.
