Sony Raises Profit Forecast and Proposes Tamron Acquisition

Sony Group Corporation increased its full-year profit forecast and issued an acquisition proposal to Tamron following strong first-quarter growth in gaming and sensors.

Sony Group Corporation raised its full-year operating profit forecast by 8% to 1.72 trillion yen for the year ending March 2027, citing strong performance in its image sensors and gaming divisions. For the fiscal first quarter ending June 30, 2026, the company reported a 32% increase in net profit to 342.2 billion yen and an 8% rise in sales to 2.84 trillion yen, bolstered by cost controls, exchange rate boosts, and U.S. tariff refunds following a Supreme Court of the United States ruling.

The PlayStation unit saw operating income jump 37% despite flat sales and a one-third year-over-year decrease in console shipments, with 1.6 million units sold. Sony expects future growth driven by the November 19 launch of "Grand Theft Auto VI" and the February release of "God of War Laufey." Meanwhile, the music division grew 21% due to streaming and interest in Michael Jackson's catalog, and Crunchyroll surpassed 21 million paid subscribers. Sony Pictures Entertainment reported a 13% revenue decline to $1.98 billion due to fewer theatrical releases and lower television production deliveries.

Strategic and operational challenges persist. Sony has submitted an acquisition proposal to camera lens maker Tamron, which established a committee to review the bid. The company also warned of negative financial impacts from a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Kumamoto, Japan, on July 28. While production has largely resumed at most semiconductor sites, operations remain suspended at one facility.
