Judge Carl Nichols Denies DOJ Request to Dismiss Bannon Case

U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols denied a request from the United States Department of Justice to dismiss the contempt of Congress indictment against Steve Bannon. Bannon, a former aide to Donald Trump, was convicted in 2022 and served four months in prison for refusing to cooperate with the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro argued that the dismissal was in the "interests of justice" based on prosecutorial discretion. However, Judge Nichols ruled that the government failed to provide the necessary legal justification or a factual basis for dropping the case, noting that the request did not explain the motivations for the dismissal.

While the current request was rejected, Judge Nichols stated that the government remains free to submit a renewed motion that complies with legal requirements.
