Eurozone Economic Sentiment Rises Ahead of Expected Rate Hikes
Eurozone economic confidence exceeded expectations in August, though rising consumer inflation expectations may prompt the European Central Bank to raise interest rates in September.
Economic sentiment in the Eurozone continued to recover in August, with overall economic confidence reaching 98.4 and surpassing the expected 97.5. This growth was driven by improved confidence levels in both the services and manufacturing sectors, with services confidence rising to 5.8 and industrial confidence improving to -5.3.
Despite the general recovery, consumer inflation expectations rose to 33.0 from 30.4, marking the first increase since April. In contrast, selling price expectations declined from 17.8 to 16.4.
The European Central Bank is expected to raise key interest rates in September to combat stubborn inflation pressures. These pressures are being exacerbated by the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.
