Novo Nordisk Explores Hair Loss Market to Diversify Portfolio
Novo Nordisk is investigating an expansion into hair-loss treatments to offset patent expirations and a loss of obesity market leadership to Eli Lilly.
Novo Nordisk is exploring an expansion into the hair-loss market as part of a broader strategy to diversify its pharmaceutical portfolio. Chief Scientific Officer Martin Lange noted that while the company could leverage its scientific knowledge in this space, hair loss is not the immediate priority.
The strategic pivot follows a loss of leadership in the obesity market to Eli Lilly and Company, as well as looming patent expirations for Ozempic and Wegovy in Europe and the United States. To mitigate these risks, the company is accelerating its internal pipeline and considering acquisitions to target treatments for heart disease, addiction, menopause, and liver and blood disorders.
CEO Mike Doustdar addressed a decline in investor confidence following a recent turnaround plan that lacked concrete details. He noted that rebuilding that confidence will require time and hard work.
