China Launches Surprise Inspections of Electric Vehicle Production

The Government of China has launched an intensified oversight regime for electric vehicle production to combat safety risks caused by rapid development cycles and aggressive domestic price wars. A joint directive issued by four government bodies, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the State Administration for Market Regulation, establishes a system of surprise spot checks targeting assembly plants, component suppliers, dealerships, and third-party testing laboratories.

Inspectors are focusing on production consistency, vehicle durability, and the reliability of AI-driven driver-assistance features. The government warns that manufacturers failing to meet these standards or those with excessive consumer complaints face severe penalties, including mandatory recalls, the suspension of production approvals, or the halting of vehicle registrations by local police.

To ensure the integrity of the process, the directive targets the certification chain. Third-party laboratories found issuing fraudulent reports risk the immediate revocation of their licenses. Beijing intends these measures to safeguard the global reputation of Chinese automakers as they increase exports to markets in Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.
