AI Power Trade Deflates Amid Severe Infrastructure Bottlenecks
The AI power trade has declined since June as severe supply chain shortages and labor gaps hinder data center expansion despite rising demand forecasts.
The AI power trade, which drove significant stock surges for merchant generators and equipment suppliers in early 2024, has deflated since June. While market valuations have corrected, power remains a critical bottleneck for the expansion of data centers.
BloombergNEF has revised power demand forecasts upward, though these figures rely on corporate announcements rather than actual construction, creating reliability risks. Physical infrastructure buildout faces severe constraints, with substation transformer lead times now exceeding 160 weeks. A shortage of skilled electricians further slows the deployment of necessary power systems.
Investment opportunities in the sector have shifted toward regulated utilities, merchant generators, and equipment suppliers that target unregulated behind-the-meter demand. Companies such as Vistra Corporation and Talen Energy previously benefited from selling electricity into wholesale markets for AI data centers, while suppliers like Bloom Energy remain central to the power buildout effort.
