Consumers Adopt AI Agents for Automated Personal Shopping

Shoppers are using AI agents like Instinct and Muse to automate research and grocery orders while maintaining manual control over final payments for security.

Consumers are increasingly integrating AI agents such as Instinct and Muse into their shopping routines to automate tasks like monitoring flight prices, researching products, and ordering groceries. While these tools offer time savings and better deals, users report significant reliability and security concerns.

Technical errors have led to unexpected outcomes, including one instance where an Instinct agent ordered 20 pounds of chicken wings after incorrectly inferring a larger quantity from past purchase history. To mitigate security risks and bypass Captcha puzzles, many users avoid granting agents direct access to primary credit cards, opting instead for single-use cards or manually completing the final checkout process.

Vipin Porwal, CEO of the rewards platform Smarty, suggests that these anxieties will shape behavior during the upcoming holiday season. He predicts that while AI agents will handle the bulk of research and price comparison, shoppers will likely retain control over the final transaction to ensure accuracy and preserve the entertainment value of the shopping experience.
