Gujarat Approves 12-Hour Shifts for Micron Semiconductor Plant
The Government of Gujarat granted Micron Semiconductor approval for 12-hour work shifts at its Sanand facility to support continuous cleanroom operations.
The Government of Gujarat has granted Micron Semiconductor Technology India Private Limited approval to implement 12-hour work shifts at its semiconductor facility in Sanand. This first-of-its-kind approval in the state was issued under the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSH) Code, 2020, to accommodate the continuous operating requirements of semiconductor cleanrooms and maximize equipment utilization.
Under the new arrangement, daily shifts may extend to 12 hours, though the total working week remains capped at 48 hours. Any remaining days in the week are treated as paid leave. The state specified that these extended shifts are strictly voluntary and require written consent from adult workers.
The decision comes as the Sanand plant transitions into commercial production. Micron expects to assemble and test tens of millions of chips in 2026, with annual volumes rising to hundreds of millions starting in 2027. This move aligns with a broader state strategy to attract semiconductor investment under the India Semiconductor Mission.
