Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson Launches National Police Chief Search

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson launched a national search on Tuesday for a new police chief following the dismissal of Shon Barnes. Barnes was asked to resign approximately one month ago after facing criticism over the Seattle Police Department's response to a mass shooting at the Bite of Seattle festival on July 26.

Interim Chief Andre Sayles currently leads the department. Mayor Wilson stated she is seeking a visionary leader committed to constitutional policing and public trust. The selection process includes a public survey open until September 15 and community forums beginning September 26. A search advisory committee, co-chaired by retired judge Mary Yu and former Zillow director Ian Warner, will evaluate candidates through November, with finalist interviews in December and a final selection expected in early 2027.

The search occurs as the city manages a sharp rise in hate crimes. Of the 66 recorded hate crimes in the first seven months of 2026, nearly 20% targeted the Jewish population. Spokesman Jonah Spangenthal-Lee noted that the administration has discussed scheduling conflicts for the September 26 forum, as the date coincides with Shabbat.
