Pfizer and Merck Expand Pipelines Through Multi-Billion Dollar Acquisitions
Pfizer and Merck are utilizing aggressive acquisition strategies to offset upcoming patent expirations and diversify their drug portfolios in oncology, immunology, and weight loss.
Pharmaceutical giants Pfizer and Merck are aggressively pursuing acquisitions to mitigate the financial impact of impending patent cliffs and post-pandemic market shifts. Both companies are positioning themselves as value investments by expanding their pipelines into high-growth therapeutic areas.
Pfizer has focused on oncology and immunology, highlighted by its 2023 acquisition of Seagen for $43 billion. The company also entered the GLP-1 weight loss drug market by acquiring Metsera for $10 billion, a move that followed a legal battle and a competing $9 billion unsolicited bid from Novo Nordisk.
Merck is leveraging revenue from its immunotherapy Keytruda and the pulmonary arterial hypertension drug Winrevair to fund diversification. To prepare for Keytruda's patent expirations after 2028, Merck completed a $10 billion acquisition of Verona Pharma in October, adding the COPD drug Ohtuvayre to its portfolio. Both organizations continue to maintain consistent dividend histories while using these strategic buyouts to ensure long-term revenue stability.
