Vivek Ramaswamy Trails Amy Acton in Ohio Governor Race
Republican Vivek Ramaswamy trails Democrat Amy Acton in a contentious Ohio gubernatorial race marked by personal attacks and stark policy differences on taxes and capital punishment.
Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is currently trailing Democrat Amy Acton in the race for Governor of Ohio. Ramaswamy entered the contest with the official endorsement of President Donald Trump, a move that cleared the GOP field of other contenders, though he continues to struggle with a public image described as a pugilistic troll.
The campaign has devolved into a personal advertising war. Ramaswamy and his supporters have spent 101 million dollars on ads, while Acton's campaign portrays him as a swindler. In response, Ramaswamy has targeted Acton over a 2019 police incident at her home. Acton has refused to debate Ramaswamy, citing a history of lying, which Ramaswamy characterizes as a lack of leadership capacity.
Policy divisions are sharp. Ramaswamy proposes eliminating the state income tax and resetting property tax baselines, while Acton advocates for property tax spike rebates and expanding the homestead exemption. On the death penalty, Ramaswamy supports capital punishment for egregious crimes, whereas Acton intends to continue the current moratorium and is considering total abolition. Regarding data centers, Ramaswamy suggests building on brownfields with free electricity for neighbors, while Acton proposes a conditional moratorium to ensure union labor.
A victory for Acton would be historic, as Ohio has never elected a woman as governor, despite the state trending Republican in recent presidential elections.
