Anthropic Spends $3.4 Billion on Gas-Fired Power Generators

Anthropic entered a $3.4 billion agreement with San Antonio-based OnePWR Solutions to secure 1.7 gigawatts of gas-fired generators for its data centers. Finalized in late September, the deal includes the engineering and construction capabilities required for installation.
To avoid long manufacturing lead times and electricity shortages, the AI laboratory took over existing equipment orders that OnePWR had previously placed with Caterpillar. This transaction represents the largest known single purchase of power-generation equipment by an AI developer, highlighting a trend of AI firms bypassing traditional energy suppliers to ensure infrastructure stability.
The investment comes as the company prepares for a potential initial public offering as early as November. However, Anthropic faces financing challenges, and the investment firm Blackstone has issued warnings to investors regarding the company's potential junk credit rating.
