Aung San Suu Kyi Meets ICRC Representative in Naypyidaw

Detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi met with Arnaud de Baecque, the Resident Representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), on Monday, August 3, 2026, in Naypyidaw. This encounter marks the 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate's first publicized contact with a foreign official since the February 2021 military coup. The military-backed government released photographs of the meeting, including images of the pair shaking hands and Suu Kyi cutting a birthday cake.

The ICRC confirmed the visit followed standard procedures for visiting people deprived of liberty and included a private conversation. While the government images show Suu Kyi appearing relaxed and healthy, the ICRC has not disclosed specific health details or the contents of the discussion. The meeting follows a proof-of-life campaign led by her son, Kim Aris, who described the event as a potential first step toward her release.

President Min Aung Hlaing authorized the meeting as he seeks to end Myanmar's diplomatic isolation and restore ties with ASEAN ahead of a scheduled visit to Thailand. Despite the gesture, the National Unity Government maintains that armed opposition will continue until Suu Kyi is released. She remains under house arrest following a series of politically motivated charges that originally carried a 33-year sentence, later reduced to 18 years.
