Older Founders Drive Startup Success Amid Gender Funding Gap

Research shows the average fastest-growing U.S. startup founder is 45, though women-led firms receive far less capital despite higher revenue returns.

Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, and the University of Pennsylvania indicates that the average founder of the fastest-growing American startups is 45 years old, suggesting that professional experience is a primary driver of success.

Despite this trend, a significant funding gap persists for women in this age group. Data from PitchBook shows that all-women founding teams received only about 2% of total U.S. venture capital in 2024. This disparity exists despite evidence that women-led startups are more capital-efficient.

Analysis by the Boston Consulting Group and the Female Founders Fund reveals that women-led startups generate 78 cents in revenue for every dollar invested, while male-founded startups generate 31 cents. Additionally, women-led firms burn 15% less capital.

Representation within the investment industry remains low. Women hold only 17.3% of decision-making roles at U.S. venture firms with at least $50 million in assets, and female founding partners comprise just 2.4% of all partners.
