David Ellison Pledges Film Output to Save Paramount-WBD Merger
David Ellison is attempting to finalize a merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery despite lawsuits from twelve state attorneys general over anti-competitive concerns.
David Ellison, head of Skydance, is working to finalize a merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery amid significant legal challenges. Twelve state attorneys general have filed a lawsuit to block the deal, alleging that the merger would create a monopoly, reduce diversity in film production, and weaken the bargaining power of Hollywood creatives.
To mitigate opposition from theater owners, Ellison pledged a contractual agreement to release at least 30 theatrical films every year. This proposal includes a 45-day exclusive theatrical window and a 90-day moratorium on streaming distribution for those titles.
Despite these concessions to the industry, the merger plan includes a 6 billion dollar post-merger resizing effort expected to result in thousands of job losses. Ellison and his supporters have characterized the legal opposition as politically motivated due to his ties to Donald Trump, while critics maintain the focus remains on the anti-competitive nature of the consolidation.
