General Motors Re-enters Hybrid Market for SUVs and Trucks

General Motors will introduce hybrid vehicles in key SUV and pickup truck segments following a slowdown in electric vehicle sales.

General Motors is re-entering the hybrid vehicle market after a strategic focus on electric vehicles failed to meet expectations. During a Q3 financial call, CEO Mary Barra announced that the company will introduce hybrids across multiple key segments where the company currently operates, specifically targeting SUVs and pickup trucks.

Barra clarified that the company will not return to the compact car, midsize car, or minivan segments, despite the high popularity of hybrids in those categories. This strategic shift follows a period of rising gasoline prices and a slowdown in EV sales that has benefited competitors such as Toyota Motor, Honda, and Hyundai.

While Toyota sales have increased by 1.2% this year, overall sales for General Motors have declined by 6.4%. This trend has narrowed the sales gap between the two companies within the United States market.
