Islamic State Attacks Kill 57 Security Personnel in Niger

A Sahel branch of the Islamic State killed at least 57 security personnel during two separate attacks in Niger on September 25, 2026. The Ministry of Defence reported that 38 soldiers died during an assault on the Dabagu base in the Tahoua region near the Malian border, where several soldiers remain missing.

A second attack on the same day in Abala-Filingue resulted in the deaths of 19 military police. These losses occur as the military junta that seized power in a 2023 coup continues to struggle with a long-running jihadist conflict.

The heavy casualties have reportedly fueled dissatisfaction within the army. This internal instability contributed to an attempted mutiny in August, which the junta eventually quelled.
