Maine Democrats Debate to Replace Senate Nominee Graham Platner

Democratic candidates in Maine are competing to replace Graham Platner through a series of debates and county meetings leading to a July 25 convention.

The Maine Democratic Party is managing a compressed nomination process to replace former U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner, who withdrew from the race following allegations of rape. The party is currently conducting county-level meetings to select delegates for a nominating convention scheduled for July 25 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. To ensure broad participation, Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson extended the online pre-verification window for eligible Democrats participating in electronic voting this weekend.

On July 17, eight candidates participated in a televised debate in Portland. Leading contenders, including former CDC director Nirav Shah, former Senate President Troy Jackson, and Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, focused their attacks on Republican incumbent Senator Susan Collins. A central theme of the forum was the Monday shooting of Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero by an ICE agent in Biddeford, leading several candidates to call for the agency's abolition.

While 13 candidates initially sought the nomination, Paige Loud withdrew on Thursday, labeling the process a deeply unserious spectacle. The remaining candidates face a July 20 midnight deadline to submit 500 registered voter signatures to qualify for the convention. A second televised debate is scheduled for July 23 on CNN before the final nominee is selected by 601 delegates in Bangor.
