Banned Thai Politician Pita Limjaroenrat Teaches at Harvard

Pita Limjaroenrat, the banned former leader of Thailand's Move Forward party, is teaching a course on public office campaigns at Harvard University.

Pita Limjaroenrat, the former leader of Thailand's Move Forward party, is currently teaching a course on running for public office in developing countries at the Harvard Kennedy School. He is mentoring students from various nations, including ASEAN members, on data-driven politics, campaign structure, and the influence of artificial intelligence on elections.

Limjaroenrat led the Move Forward party to a first-place finish in the May 2023 elections using a platform focused on decentralization, demonopolization, and demilitarization. Despite the victory, the military-backed Senate blocked his appointment as prime minister. By August 2024, the Move Forward party was disbanded and Limjaroenrat was banned from Thai politics for 10 years.

Speaking at the Athens Democracy Forum, Limjaroenrat described Thailand as a "competitive autocracy" where leaders use legal mechanisms rather than military force to overturn the people's choice. He noted that while elections occur, autocrats maintain the ability to nullify those results through various means.
