Ghana Strengthens Diplomatic Ties With Nigeria and Gabon

Ghana conducted a series of diplomatic engagements in late July 2026 to bolster regional cooperation and economic integration. On July 24, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa received Shehu Ilu Barde, Nigeria's High Commissioner-designate, in Accra. The officials focused on removing trade barriers and implementing the proposed ECO single currency to facilitate cross-border transactions under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Following these talks, John Dramani Mahama hosted Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema for a three-day official visit beginning July 28. The leaders met at the Jubilee House to sign two memoranda of understanding regarding political consultations and diplomatic training between the respective nations' diplomatic institutes.

The Ghana-Gabon agreements expand cooperation across agriculture, education, and climate change. President Nguema specifically addressed the need to combat maritime piracy and illegal trafficking in the Gulf of Guinea. President Mahama emphasized using AfCFTA to boost commercial exchanges in manufacturing and agribusiness. The visit concluded with the planting of a commemorative tree at the Jubilee House.
