Google Appoints Koray Kavukcuoglu to Lead DeepMind

Google appointed Koray Kavukcuoglu as Senior Vice President of DeepMind to prioritize product execution and close the AI performance gap with competitors.

Google LLC appointed Koray Kavukcuoglu as Senior Vice President of DeepMind, replacing cofounder Demis Hassabis. Hassabis transitions to the role of organization chair, while Kavukcuoglu, the former CTO and chief AI architect, will report directly to CEO Sundar Pichai.

Kavukcuoglu now oversees Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. This leadership change marks a strategic shift for the company, prioritizing product execution and frontier model performance over academic research. The move aims to address Google's lag in critical areas such as coding and establish a more predictable release cadence for models like the delayed Gemini 3.5 Pro.

The restructuring comes as Google seeks to close the gap with competitors OpenAI and Anthropic, which have released GPT-5.6 and the Mythos model, respectively. While Alphabet shares dipped following the announcement, the company continues to see strong monetization of Gemini Enterprise across Fortune 100 companies.
