Romania Pledges Financial Support for Ukraine Reconstruction Projects

Romania is allocating 1 billion lei to support companies investing in Ukraine's reconstruction, focusing on energy, connectivity, and regional stability.

The Romanian government and strategic analysts have outlined a comprehensive plan to integrate Romania into the reconstruction of Ukraine, a process estimated to cost nearly 600 billion US dollars over the next decade. During the Rebuilding Ukraine: Security, Opportunities, Investment conference, Alexandru Nazare, Romania's Finance Minister, announced the allocation of up to 1 billion lei (approximately 200 euros) for the 2026-2029 period. These funds will strengthen Exim Banca Romaneasca's ability to support exports and international investments, supplemented by the InvestEU programme's Ukraine Export Credit Guarantee Facility.

Nazare identified connectivity, energy, and business relations as the primary competitive advantages Romania offers. He noted that stability in the Black Sea and Danube regions is essential to reducing transport costs and insurance premiums for regional trade.

Complementing the financial strategy, Ionel Nitu, president of the New Strategy Center Romania, proposed three major infrastructure projects to enhance regional connectivity. These include a bridge over the Danube between Isaccea and Orlivka, a regional logistics hub integrating ports from Galati to Giurgiulesti, and a railway corridor linking Gdansk and Constanta via western Ukraine. Nitu argued that these projects would improve military mobility and trade between the Baltic and Black Sea regions, ensuring that Ukraine remains a prosperous and stable European partner.
